Distinguished and Famous people from Katherine
🩺 Dr Clyde Fenton
Doctor and pilot Clyde Fenton developed an early medical flying service from Katherine during the 1930s. Small aircraft enabled him to reach patients across distances that made ordinary road travel slow or impossible. His work combined medical judgement with the mechanical demands and risks of flying in the north. Katherine Museum preserves an aircraft associated with that period and records his place in the town’s history. His local connection is practical medical service based in Katherine, before wartime duties took him into other aviation work.
🧭 Graeme Bucknall
Graeme Bucknall visited cattle stations in the Katherine Patrol region while leading the United Church of Northern Australia in the early 1970s. His work combined congregational responsibilities with concern for people separated by long distances and cultural differences. Later patrols were based in Alice Springs, and he also researched inland history. He understood isolation from a bush childhood and knew that travel, vehicle maintenance and paperwork could crowd out rest. Katherine’s connection is the documented pastoral visiting, not an assumed town residence. It records the steady work required to keep contact with dispersed communities.
🚚 Noel Buntine
Noel Buntine made Katherine the base of a major cattle-transport business. By 1962 he was operating Buntine Roadways there, hauling stock from Top End stations towards the Wyndham meatworks. An early Mack prime mover carried the memorable name High and Mighty. Expansion followed as road trains increasingly replaced long-distance droving, with depots servicing a wide inland network. His interests also included pastoral administration and Katherine racing. The town was a sustained business base, not simply a stopping point. His story belongs to the changes in roads, vehicles and organisation that altered how northern cattle reached market.
